This is a beautifully understated Tussar Silk Saree from West Bengal, distinguished by its natural ivory tone, characteristic textured silk surface, bold temple-inspired borders and an unusually intricate woven pallu. Tussar is a wild silk known for its slightly uneven texture and subdued natural sheen rather than the highly polished appearance of conventional mulberry silk.

The natural ivory body

The first thing that stands out is the saree’s gorgeous unbleached ivory/cream base. Rather than a stark white, it has the warm, slightly golden undertone that complements the natural character of Tussar beautifully.

The visible weave has a gentle textural quality and subdued lustre. This combination of texture and natural sheen is one of the most recognisable characteristics of Tussar silk.

The body has deliberately been kept relatively uncluttered, allowing the beauty of the silk itself to remain prominent.

Tiny red and black woven buttas

Scattered across the ivory body are small geometric buttas in deep red and black.

They are placed quite far apart rather than forming a dense pattern. This gives the saree a wonderfully contemporary, minimalist character while still retaining a traditional handloom vocabulary.

The alternating red and black motifs also establish the colour story that continues into both the border and pallu.

Striking two-colour temple border

One of the most distinctive elements is the bold pointed border.

On one side, elongated black temple/spire-like motifs project inward against the ivory body, while the opposite edge carries the same dramatic form in deep crimson-red.

The main pallu panel is especially beautiful. It features a delicate diamond-lattice composition filled with tiny floral forms. Within the lattice are repeating miniature flowers in red and black, accompanied by subtle earthy/golden detailing.

The effect is intricate without appearing heavy.

The pallu then finishes with another series of fine red-and-black horizontal woven stripes, followed by delicate tassels along the end.
